I’ve been taking my skincare a little more seriously lately, and I know that exfoliating my skin is going to do a whole lot more than just piling on products. So I tested three powder exfoliators—Embryolisse Exfoliating Milk Powder, Good Molecules Pineapple Exfoliating Powder, and Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant—and ranked them based on their texture.

When it comes to exfoliating, I prefer my products to have some sort of texture—a little grittiness—because I want to feel like they’re working, but not so much that my skin feels sensitive or scratched up afterward.

#3: Embryolisse Exfoliating Milk Powder

Coming in third place is Embryolisse’s Exfoliating Milk Powder. Out of the three exfoliators, this one had the most texture. When I added water, the powder almost immediately dissolved, but the micronized coconut shell particles remained. The consistency wasn’t very creamy; instead, it was more watery. While massaging it into my skin, I noticed that the exfoliation felt a little too strong for me. Because of this, I personally wouldn’t make this my first choice for sensitive skin.

#2: Good Molecules Pineapple Exfoliating Powder

Coming in second is Good Molecules’ Pineapple Exfoliating Powder. This one had a much creamier texture and felt incredibly soft on my skin. I actually really enjoyed using it, but it was almost too soft—I could barely feel any texture as I massaged it in. That’s really the only reason Good Molecules landed in second place, and it was a very close second.

#1: Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant

Taking the number-one spot is Dermalogica’s Daily Microfoliant. Compared to Good Molecules, Dermalogica has just the right amount of texture for me. It’s very fine and almost imperceptible, but there’s just enough there for me to feel like I’m actually exfoliating my skin. It isn’t coarse or abrasive, which is exactly what I want from an exfoliator.

The formula contains rice enzymes, which help brighten the skin, along with salicylic acid to exfoliate and help smooth skin texture. At $69, Dermalogica is the most expensive of the three, but for me, it’s definitely worth it.

Ultimately, choosing the right powder exfoliator comes down to preference. If you prefer something smoother, Good Molecules may be the best fit. If you like a more noticeable physical exfoliation, Embryolisse is the way to go. But for me, Dermalogica was right in the middle, which is why it stacks up.
